December 6 is St. Nicholas Day, widely celebrated throughout Europe… and growing in practice in the US. St. Nicholas was known for his kindness and charity, and is the forerunner of Santa Claus. Many countries celebrate St Nicholas with a parade or other festivities, including St. Nicholas’ friends Krampus and Black Peter.
When my kids were small they loved this special little holiday, which got our family in the holiday spirit of good behavior, giving, and acts of kindness toward others.
Children put their shoes outside their door, or in some countries next to the fireplace. Good children receive treats or a small gift, which then must be shared with others:
- candies, cookies, apples and nuts
- small toys
